Many survivors of intimate partner violence also struggle with substance abuse and serious mental health issues. As providers know, these issues can manifest in especially challenging ways in the setting of a domestic violence shelter or other residential setting.

To respond skillfully, residential services staff need to understand how addiction and trauma impact survivors. They also need opportunities to explore new ways to work with survivors and to support one another.

This two-day training is intended to begin to meet these needs in these ways:
  • Learning about and working with the concept of complex PTSD as a framework for responding holistically to domestic violence survivors who also struggle with addiction and serious mental health issues.
  • Learning the basics of addiction and mental illness.
  • Learning about and practicing with the relational model, stages of change theory, and motivational interviewing, useful tools for responding to program participants.
  • Exploring the impact of secondary traumatic stress on workers' capacity to provide sustained support to survivors and their children.
FOR THIS TRAINING TO BE EFFECTIVE:
  • Those who register must be able to attend the full training (all day, both days).
  • As many staff as possible from your program should attend the full training together.

Social work CEUs (10) will be available through NASW.

Please register by April 30, 2008.
A separate registration for each attendee is required.

Register now.
Confirmation with directions to The Essex Conference Center & Retreat
will be sent when we receive your registration.
