In addition to her work at Northnode, Leandra Smollin is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Sociology. Her focus is on the intersection of race, class, gender, and sexuality in society. She has conducted research on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer issues (LGBTQ); gender and body-image; and violence in the media. Leandra also teaches Sociology and Gender Studies courses at Northeastern University, and hopes to empower students to address oppression in society and their everyday lives.
Leandra’s dedication to ending race, class, and gender inequality shapes and motivates all aspects of her work and service. As a student, Leandra helped create a Gender Studies program at her college and organized the V-Day campaign, featuring renditions of The Vagina Monologues, to raise awareness and funds for community agencies tackling domestic violence and sexual assault.
